The "Dolan" Oscars

These are not predictions for who will win over the academy, who are not always rewarding the best. My predictions offer you who should win each category, even if the best wasn't nominated. Here we go and tune in on Sunday night to see how wrong these are.

BEST PICTURE nominees: The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine, and Babel.

Who Will Win and Why? Right now, it's up in the air but I would have to say that, surprisingly, Little Miss Sunshine has a slight lead over Babel at the moment. Simply due to it's loveable nature and Babel's using of the numerous plot switching throught characters like Crash did the year before. The Academy eats up this shit for breakfast.

Who should Win and Why? Out of the 5 nominated, The Departed should win best picture. That or Letters from Iwo Jima. The Departed was simply a work of Scorsee's that is too good to overlook. However, I think the academy will honor one of the other 2. It's expert cast, dialogue, and directing are the good things about the film that may cost the film the Oscar.

Who will win: Little Miss Sunshine
Who should win: The Departed

Best Actor nominees: Forest Whitaker (Last king of Scotland), Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson), Peter O'Toole (VEnus), Leonardo DiCaprio (Blood Diamond), Will Smith (Pursuit of Happyness)

Who will win and why? Forest Whitaker is going to win and he should. IF you haven't seen his performence, you would simply amazed. It's some of the best acting of the last few years. O'Toole MIGHT steal it but it's highly doubtful at all. Whitaker wins and deserves the Oscar.

Who should win and why? See above.

Will/Should Win? Forest Whitaker, Last King of Scotland

Best Actress nominess: Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal), Helen Mirren (The Queen), Kate Winslet (Little Children), Meryl Streep (Devil Wears Prada), Penelope Cruz (Volver)

Who will win and why? Hellen Mirren for the Queen seems to have this one won already. There is no debate about whether or not her performence is great but she is playing an prominent historical character in a great movie. Plus, Mirren has never wom an Oscar and this will be her validation for this performence.

Who should win? Judi Dench and Kate Winslet don't have enough firepower this year to take over te Queen but their performences should not be forgotten. Esecially Dench, who gets nominated many times and wins alot as well, who may have performed better than Mirren. And Winslet, who keeps getting nominated in the wrong years, gives an outstanding, Oscar worthy performence.

Who will win? Hellen Mirren, The Queen
Who should win? Kate Winslet, Little Children

Best Director nominees: Martin Scorsese (The Departed), Clint Eastwood (Letters from Iwo Jima), Paul Greengrass (United 93), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel), Stephen Frears (The Queen)

Who will win and why? Eastwood will probably take this just due to the fact that Scorsese gets screwed every time. Frears and Inarritu have no chance. Scorsese or Eastwood will probably take this and I think the academy will award Scorsese

Who should win and why? Not Scorsese, but Paul Greengrass, whose United 93 is as good of a 9/11 movie as we'll ever see, should go home with the prize. Not to take anything away from Scorsese's "Departed" but giving him award would kidn of be like a pity award to me. I think Greengrass did the best job as a director, as Scorsese's film is led more by his cast. Without Greengrass' job, United 93 would have been alot worse

Who Will? Scorsese
Who Should? Greengrass

Best Supporting Actor nominees: Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls), Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), Jacke Earl Haley (little children), Djimon Honosou (Blood Diamond), Mark Wahlberg (The Departed)

Who will win and why? Eddie Murphy will win because he's Eddie Murphy and the Academy screwed Dreamgirls out of best picture. Arkin's the only other guy with a shot.

Who should win and why? Jack Nicholson (The Departed). Although not nominated, I think Jack's performence was the best one of the movie minus Dicaprio. Nicholoson could act his way out of a murder trial.

Who will win? Eddie Murphy
Who should win? Jack Nicholson

Best Supporting Actress nominees: Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Cate Blanchett (Notes on a Scandal), Adrianna Barazza (Babel)

Who will win and why? Hudson will win because everyone wants her too

Who should win and why? This is difficult. I believe all 4 others were better than Hudson. I think Runk Kikuchi was the best of those 4. Her heartwarming performence of a child crying out for attention was excellent in my view.

Who will win? "American Idol" Jennifer Hudson
Who should win? Rinko Kikuchi (Babel)

There you have it, my last movie column for a long long time. I hope youo enjoyed this preview to the Academy Awards.

MY next column will track down the worlds 10 current worst dictators. Should be fun. Aur revoir!

What to Drink: A-Z

Here we go in Dolan's first drink guide. The "A-Z" can be a event, place, or moment that necesitates a different type of drink. Here we go:

Athens
When in Greece, it's important you try Greek food and drink. Ouzo is the drink. Tasting like a funky vodka, it will clearly get to you quickly.
Drink: OUZO liqour

Birthday
On your birthday, it's whatever you want. YOU get to decide what it is, dont let anyone tell you what to drink today.
Drink: EVERYTHING

Christmas
Eggnog with a little rum is good, but can be filling. Switch to a lite beer after the nog and you should be set for the evening.
Drink: Eggnog (rummed), Lite Beer

Death
When someone dies, you need the hard stuff to make you forget faster. I reccomend a good Whiskey, or scotch would be perfect for this type of occasion. It will make you feel sadder lesser.
Drink: Whiskey (straight)

Earth Day
AS good a reason as any to celebrate. The Earth doesn't like all those alluminoum bottles, so it's gotta be in bottles. Absinthe is made from a woodworm type substance that comes directly from the Earth. That'll get you good. PLus, it'll liven up Earth day
Drink: Absinthe

Family Event/Party
To liven up these parties, nothing says "HELP ME GET OUTTA HERE FASTER" than a good multi-liqoured punch. The more it tastes like candy, the sooner they'll be outta there.
Drink: Multi-Liqoured Punch

Graduation
Graduation is a wonderful time to celebrate, and it doesn't matter what you graduate from. As for the drink, champagne is made for these types of occasions. Or Wine. But champagne is better for this type.
Drink: Champagne

Halloween
Halloween is a tricky one. I'd say, buy a cheap case of beer go around and get hammered, and then just wreak havoc.
Drink: Keystone Light (can be substituted with anyother cheap beer)

Italy
There's nothing like a fine Italian Red wine while streaming down the canals of Venice. RED WINE is not debatable bitch.
Drink: Red Wine

Japan
When in Japan, you drink Sake. End of story. You can mix it with eggnogg and make it NOG-A-SAKE but thats it.
Drink: Sake

Kid's Birth
There's nothing to celebrate a child's birht like a cigar and your favorite beer. Perfection in a moment.
Drink: High Quality Beer

Lose at Anything
Losing is not a good feeling, and only alcohol can cure your sorrows. When you lose, you should get some vodka, sulk over the bar, and drink as much of that bottle as you can.
Drink: Absolut Vodka

Marriage
Champagne, beer, liqour. If it's open bar, it's ALLLLLLL good.
Drink: Beer, Champagne, liqour, a mix of all three

New York
When in New York, I believe a good amount of beer must be drank. It's my opinion that while in New York a good Miller Lite or Bud Light, would be quite tasty.
Drink: Miller/Bud Light

Overtime
When you have to work overtime, that sucks. I will settle for nothing less than a goose n berry (Grey Goose and Cranberry) at a time like this.
Drink: Goose/Cranberry Juice

Party
At a party, depending on the type, whatever the host provides is what your drink, end of discussion.
Drink: Host choice

Queer Parade
If your straight and at a gay parade, you need somethign to get the edge off. Preferably, a martini. IT's strong and it's probably available around a gay parade.
Drink: Martini

Russia
Repeat after me: Stol-ich-naya. If your in Russia, your drinking vodka, thats it.
Drink: Stoly vodka

Spain
When in Spain, you must drink a Sangria. The fruity and sweet drink from Spain is very refreshing and delicious.
Drink: Sangria

Twenty-One
21st birthday is cause to celebrate for sure. Corona, vodka, and a wild card liqour must be in play throughout the whole day.
Drink: Corona, vodka, wild card (Schnopps?)

Uninteresting party
Boring parties need to be spiced up. I reccommend HOT DAMNN cinnamon schnoppps. Boring? not after that.
Drink: Cinnamon Schnopps

Virginity
Once you lose your virginity, you should celebrate. With what you ask? Beginnings call for beginnings and this calls for Bacardi and Cola.
Drink: Bacardi and Cola, it gets the jobs done

Winter
During the winter, you need a stiff drink to warm you up. JACK DANIELS is the only way to go here.
Drink: Whiskey

XXX
At a strip club, cocktails of all kinds should be distributed. Whatever the girls offer you, just take it, sip it down, and enjoy the view.
Drink: Any assortment of cocktails

Years End
On New Years, it's up for grabs. Obviously it's gotta have Champagne and beer. Should just have everything.
Drink: Champagne and Any Craving

Zambia
In Africa, they have this drink called "palmwine" which is supposed to be disgusting. Still, if your in AFrica, drink as the Africans do.
Drink: Palmwine

There you have it, drink up

You want the Issues?

Well, here they are. I'm going to tackle, Social Security, the Iraq war, how to bring peace to the region, tackle debt, tax cuts, Health care, from everything you oculd ever dream of.

First off, I would like to discuss health care. Our current system is not an effecient way to get medicine to the masses. A universal health care system, like that of Canada, could be the answer to our problems. SO doctors won't make as much money, they don't need all that they have anyway. Health care concerns us all and we need a drastic reform for this to work. WE NEED this system to benefit all, and not just those who can afford it.

Secondly, the Iraq war is a mess. A possible plan could be to divide IRaq into 3 sections of peoples. Put the Kurds to the North, Shi'as into eastern half of the remaining, and the west to the Sunnis. This could help stop all the violent attacks and can allow some trooops to come home gradually until we get them all home. Allow the Iraqi people to hold free election in their region and then have a 3 man election throughout the nation. This could be a fair and democratic way to start off the new Iraq.

Bringing peace to this region presents the most difficult of all tasks. Convincing Iran's nuclear program to dissist is essential. Once that has been accomplished, brokering a Middle East-like United Nations, because ours doesn't do shit for them. Start trade to boost these economies and get these people jobs.

TO go on, taxes and debt are problems that have always been at the forefront of debate. To overcome debt, we simply need to create more home grown products and increase our exports, decrease our imports. Debt will take time to overcome but with patience it can be done.
Taxes need to be raised at this moment so they can be lowered in the future. We need money for the war and the military. Keeping the economy up though may allow us to not have to take that route, which would be quite convenient.

To finish, Social Security. S.S. may be moot at this point, as my generation will likely see nothing from FDR's gracious program. I'm not very sure what can be done about this, because an increase in SS means an increase in Taxes. But hopefully, there is a solution in sights.

I hope you enjoyed my semi-simple solution to the toughest problems our nation faces. Hopefully, we can tackle these problems in the future and get over them

Thanks for joining the blog again, as next time I will be providing a list of the 10 Worst Dictators of All Time, and that will be followed by the DOLAN OSCARS (not my oscar predictions, just my opinion). THanks again, Peace, Love, and OBAMA

Dolan's Universal Travel Guide

Yeah, about that continent thing, not going to happen. Instead, I'm going to put up the best places to visit and stuff in numerous countries. Oh and the much anticipated hilary duff interview will be up very soon.

5 Cities to Visit in North/South America
1. New York City, NY
Big city, lively city. Personally, not a big fan. But it's a very diverse city where you can find just about anything to do.

2. San Diego, CA
LA's crowded and overrated. You want beautiful beaches or bars? You want calm and relaxing or wild and out of control? San Diego's got it all. It's the way to go in California

3. Chicago, ILL
Well, I'm biased but it's also a great and diverse city that any tourist should see in a visit. The food, my god the food. There's so much to do no matter what your up for. Go there. Now.

4. Macchu Picchu, Peru
The old Incan ruins must be a site to behold and I can only hope that I travel there one day. If your in for a little culture and some of the most beautiful sites in the world, you can't go wrong visiting Peru.

5. Maui, Hawaii
Speaking of beautiful, the landscapes and weather of Hawaii make it perfect any time of the year. There is so much to do or so little to do but either way, your in Hawaii.

5 Cities to Visit in Europe
1. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Minus the pot, Amsterdam is still a marvel of a city. The odd architecture and millions on their bikes just shows the easy going nature of the city. Plus, if you like to party, Amsterdam is pretty much ridiculous.

2. Paris, France
More of a sightseeing trip, but boy are there alot of sites. Too bad French people suck. Just kidding. Sort of. The city has numerous marvels and romanticism that can be rivaled in few cities around the world

3. Rome, Italy
Well, if you want beauty, Rome's got it. That old empire surely left alot of interesting things behind for us tourists to stare in awe at. Such a great mix of ancient and modern architecture coming together to brings us one amazing city.

4. Santorini Island, Greece
An island that is basically a volcano, it's truly something to lay your eyes on. Whether it be the black sand, walking up the volcano, or gave into the clear blue water, Santorini, is in a word, breathtaking.

5. Madrid, Spain
A very lively and different city. The nightlife is supposed to be second to none and the Spanish style buildings and customs make for an amazing trip in a wonderfully upbeat city.

5 Cities to Visit in Asia/Africa
1. Hong Kong
The One of the smallest countries in the world, also one of the most interesting. It's expensive but industry and tourism are booming lately. One of the most modern and beautiful places in all of Asia.

2. Toyko, Japan
Toyko's downtown arcitecture alone are worth the trip. Toyko is a calm but lively city with many businesses. However, there is great shopping, sightseeing, and thousands of things to do.

3. Bangkok, Thailand
I bet your saying, REALLY? Yes, really. Bangkok is THE party capital of Asia with numerous dance clubs open late into the night. The downtown area is somewhat modern, but taking in the culture and the excitement makes up for tenfold.

4. Cairo, Egypt
Pyramids, Sphynx, tombs, mummies. I mean what more incentive does one need? Egypt has some of the oldest and wonderous sites that have lasted for centuries. Possibly the most interesting site to visit in the world, if you want to see and not do.

5. Tunis, Tunisia
Dont worry, it's on the coast so your not THAT far from Europe. But the old wreckage of what's left of Ancient Carthage is quite a site. It's well worth the trip, especially if your interested in that type of stuff. Tunisia is relatively safe and Tunis is a beautifully modern city for an African city.

5 Cities you should visit in The Rest of the World
1. Auckland, New Zealand
New Zealand may be the most underrated country in all of the world. The landscape is breathtaking and the actually city of Auckland has a flare to it that you can't find anywhere else. Skip, Australia, go New Zealand.

2. Sydney, Australia
That's not to say Australia isn't nice, because it is. Beaches, women, all set around a major metropolis on the coast. Beautiful city with many reasons to visit.

3. Easter Island (owned by Chile)
Some interesting mystery surrounds this country because of it's bizarre statues and myths about how teh island became uninhabitated. This is more of a one day visit but it could be quite the visit indeed.

4. Port Lockroy, Antarctica
Well, if your crazy go for it. It could be the most wild thing you ever do.

5. Hobary, Tasmania
Why not? If your already in Australia or New Zealand, check this out for a day. It's got a great climate, beeches, and everything you could want in a relaxing tourism spot

So thats it, go travel. I will need at least a few days to recover from the Super Bowl, no matter the result, so don't expect anything for a few days or maybe even a week.
